The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is a striking tribute, with 58,318 names etched into black granite to honor American service members who died or went missing in the Vietnam War. Dedicated in 1982, the wall lists names in chronological order by the date of casualty. Starting at the center (Panel 1E) in 1959, the names continue to the end of the east wall (70E), then pick up at the far end of the west wall (70W) and return to the center (1W) with those from the 1970s and later. A small diamond marks the names of those confirmed dead or missing.
