ABOUT US

The VFW traces its roots back to 1899, when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and the Philippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service. Many arrived home wounded or sick. There was no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to care for themselves.
 
In their misery, some of these veterans banded together and formed organizations that would become known as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States. After chapters were formed in Ohio, Colorado, and Pennsylvania, the movement gained momentum quickly. By 1915, membership had grown to 5,000; by 1936, it had almost doubled to 200,000. 

Since then, the VFW's voice has been instrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating a GI Bill for the 20th century, developing the national cemetery system, and fighting for compensation for Vietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and for veterans diagnosed with Gulf War Syndrome. In 2008, VFW won a long-fought victory with the passage of the GI Bill for the 21st Century, providing expanded educational benefits to America's active-duty service members and members of the Guard and Reserves serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. 

The VFW has also fought to improve VA medical center services for women veterans.

Besides helping fund the creation of the Vietnam War, Korean War, World War II, and Women in Military Service memorials, the VFW became the first veterans' organization in 2005 to contribute to the construction of the new Disabled Veterans for Life Memorial, which opened in November 2010.

Annually, the nearly 2 million members of the VFW and its Auxiliaries contribute more than 8.6 million hours of volunteerism in the community, including participation in Make A Difference Day and National Volunteer Week. 

From providing over $3 million in college scholarships and savings bonds to students every year to advocating for the elevation of the Department of Veterans Affairs to the president's cabinet, the VFW is there.

The Moving Wall was organized by St. Albans VFW Post 6418.
It was on display in St. Albans, West Virginia, June 25–29, 2026,
at the St. Albans Shopping Center on Rt. 60.
Opening ceremonies took place on Saturday, June 27, 2026, during the display period.
St. Albans Post 6418 was awarded West Virginia VFW Post of the Year by the Dept. of West Virginia.

VFW Post 6418 will convene its next regular meeting on Thursday, October 15, 2026, beginning promptly at 6:00 p.m. at the Post Home in St. Albans, West Virginia. One of the scooters being raffled will be on display, and Scooter Raffle Tickets will be available for purchase.

  • The VFW Riders of Post 6418 will meet in conjunction with the regular Post meeting. All Riders are encouraged to attend and participate.
    This combined meeting supports ongoing coordination between Post leadership and the Riders group as we advance veteran‑focused programs, community engagement, and upcoming service initiatives.

    District 2 School of Instruction – Official Notice

    A School of Instruction for District 2 will be held on Saturday, October 17, at 10:00 a.m. The training will take place at St. Albans VFW Post 6418, 1011 Pennsylvania Ave. in St. Albans, West Virginia 25177.

    Several representatives from the Department will be present to provide instruction across multiple subject areas. All Post Commanders within District 2 are required to attend this School of Instruction ("SOI").

    Much of the material presented will be particularly relevant to Quartermasters and Adjutants, and each Post is strongly encouraged to ensure that their QM and/or Adjutant is in attendance. Topics will likely include OMS procedures, weekly tally sheets, and an overview of the new Command Post system that will replace OMS.

    This training will offer valuable information for all officers, and it would be beneficial for each Post to have its full leadership present.

  • Southern Conference Meeting and VFW RIDERS Meeting to be held in Mobile, Alabama
    Mobile, Alabama – October 22–25, 2026, Mobile Convention Center (1 S Water St., Mobile, Alabama). Renaissance Mobile Riverview Hotel. Open to VFW, Auxiliary, Cootie, and VFW RIDERS. Registration Fee: $95 (includes access to main activities and the full program). Registration is now open at vfwal.org The VFW Riders will conduct their Main Business Session, participate in scheduled Conference events, and take part in a Mardi Gras‑themed Parade of Beach Wagons. The Official VFW Riders Group Ride is scheduled for Friday morning, October 23, 2026.
